#EndGamblingAds on SBS!
Dear Board members and Managing Director, I’m writing as a dedicated SBS viewer and concerned community member to ask that you end gambling ads on SBS. My family and I have loved SBS and the content you program for many years; from Eurovision to Big Mob Brekky, to your in language radio services, your commitment to enriching communities through quality content has been admirable. That’s why I’ve been so upset to see SBS running gambling ads. Sports gambling is a huge source of harm in Australia; just over half of Australians who gamble online are at risk or already experiencing gambling-related harm, and gambling ads normalise and glamourise this dangerous product. Research shows that 3 in 4 Aussie kids now think that gambling is a normal part of sport, and ads have played no small part in creating this view. It is so disappointing to be seeing SBS placing gambling revenue over community health and wellbeing, particularly as families struggle to deal with the ongoing stress and isolation caused by COVID-19. I would love to see SBS play a leading role in reducing gambling harm instead; by programming content that destigmatises gambling addiction, or translating gambling harm resources into more languages. I really hope that you will listen to community voices on this issue; after all, 91% of SBS viewers hate gambling ads, and want an immediate end to them. Kind regards,
