As a Carlton fan, I think it's time we took a stand on gambling
Dear President LoGiudice, (cc CEO Steven Trigg, membership) I'm a Blues fan, but I'm no fan of pokies and sportsbetting. I recently learnt that our club operates poker machines that take $17million from people each year. That causes a lot of heartache and hardship for those that wind up addicted to these deceitful machines. Poker machines are designed to be addictive - and I think that means our club has a responsibility to do the right thing. It's a problem for almost all AFL clubs, and for pubs and clubs. That's why I think we should publicly support tougher laws that make these machines safer for everyone. While the pokies are hidden away, sportsbetting advertising has gotten completely out of hand. Kids are being exposed to sportsbetting ad’s every time they watch a game. It's just not right that kids are learning the odds on a game rather than team and player stat’s. Again, we need across-the-board changes. Our club should publicly support a ban on all sportsbetting advertising. We did it for tobacco once we learnt how dangerous and addictive it is. The same principle should now apply to sportsbetting. I'm a dedicated Blues fan, but I hate pokies and dodgy sportsbetting. Please make sure I can be proud of my club in everything that we do on and off the field.
