Let's get dodgy gambling out of the AFL in SA
Dear Chariman David Koch, (cc membership, corporate) I'm a Crows fan, but I'm no fan of pokies and sports betting. I recently learnt that pokies owned by AFL clubs take $93 million from people each year. That causes a lot of heartache and hardship for those that wind up addicted to these deceitful machines. Poker machines are designed to be addictive - and I think that means both South Australian clubs have a responsibility to do the right thing. It's a problem for almost all AFL clubs, and for pubs and clubs. That's why I think Port should publicly support tougher laws that make these machines safer for everyone. While the pokies are hidden away, sports betting advertising has gotten completely out of hand. Kids are being exposed to sports betting ad’s every time they watch a game. It's just not right that kids are learning the odds on a game rather than team and player stat’s. Again, we need across-the-board changes. Port Adelaide should publicly support a ban on all sports betting advertising. We did it for tobacco once we learnt how dangerous and addictive it is. The same principle should now apply to sports betting. South Australia could lead the way, but we need Port Adelaide to catch up to the Crows on backing tougher laws for dodgy gambling.
